-Caveat Lector- http://www.theage.com.au/breaking/9912/09/A27088-1999Dec9.shtml 1,000 dead and 50,000 homeless from Ambon violence Source: AAP | Published: Thursday December 9, 6:06 PM Up to 1,000 people have been killed and 50,000 left homeless by violence on the Indonesian island of Ambon, the federal government said today. 'This is another sad event in an unsatisfactory circumstance that has been taking place for some time,' government Senate leader Robert Hill told parliament. 'Since the end of July, as a result of Muslim Christian clashes it's been suggested the death toll could be somewhere between about 500 and one thousand people. 'And the numbers that might have been dispossessed could be anything up to about 50,000.' Senator Hill said in terms of world calamities, the Ambon situation was serious and should not be overlooked in the wake of publicity surrounding East Timor. He said Australia had continued to put pressure on civil and military authorities to restore order to the island. 'There's little more that we can do in that sense, other than to monitor the situation, and urge the Indonesian authorities to take appropriate action,' Senator Hill said. The government had donated $1 million in humanitarian aid to Ambon for food, clothing and medical supplies. The International Red Cross is in the country assisting victims. But Senator Hill said there were some hopeful signs. 'Recent reports (show) President Wahid is about to visit Ambon in an effort to promote peace,' Senator Hill said. 'I think we can draw from that at least the fact that, not only the circumstances have been recognised by the leadership within Indonesia ... but also that they are prepared to take actions to try and bring about a cessation of the violence. 'And the hope that people can in fact return to their homes and live peacefully, and safely.' -- ----------------------- NOTE: In accordance with Title 17 U.S.C. section 107, this material is distributed without profit or payment to those who have expressed a prior interest in receiving this information for non-profit research and educational purposes only.
