Subj: Re: Data concerning cell phone tower numbers (Scherer)..
Dear Nigel:
You asked for some numbers of cell towers in the various countries.
I would have trouble answering that question for these reasons:
1. Wireless technology is intended to be ubiquitous as the air we
breathe. In fact the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
just released a new product called "Oxygen" (see one of the summer
1999 issues of Scientific American) which allows the user, using a
hand held device, to dial up any number of frequencies and tune
into email, TV, radio, pager or internet, etc. The utility of this
device depends on the availability of signal -- everywhere.
2. So far, an attempt is being made to camoflage the location of
these towers and antennas, for aesthetic reasons, we are assured.
Some areas of the US now have vistas with views including towers in
every direction. These are particularly noticeable in rural flat
areas. Northern Virginia, where I visited recently has some
enormous towers planted right in the middle of some of the towns --
truly ugly. In my area, Marin County, there are towers on major
hilltops and ridges and more to come. Of course folks see the
towers. What they do not see are all the micro-cell antennas along
the public utility right of way, built into newly constructed
buildings or existing buildings, built into church towers, hidden
on rooftops, throughout the transportation systems, in tunnels and
on bridges. Microcell transmitters on portable equipment, fixed
wireless, broadband... This technology intends to be everywhere.
3. The industry, who are licensed for a geographical area, build
out in this area. They claim they must hold local government
accountable for not releasing these locations for propriatary
reasons. They do not want their competitors to learn their
locations. Locating antennas would not be a difficult feat for
this industry as they have the right equipment to measure
frequencies by source.
4. The EMR Network now offers a link to two FCC search databases:
one maintained by the FCC, which is rather unwieldy. The other,
operated by Percon, a commercial enterprise. You can search by
geographical location and frequency. They have a disclaimer about
any errors or omissions. Go to http://www.emrnetwork.org
5. Then there are the military and other classified installations,
the satellites and private, unlicensed facilities... plus a great
deal that I probably do not know about.
6. Who knows what is out there and what we are being involuntarily
exposed to?
7. What does the research tell us?
Neil Cherry, in his report of June, 1998, "Actual of potential
effects of ELF and RF/MW radiation on accelerating aging of human,
animal or plant cells" which reports and summarizes the major EMF
research up to that time, states: "There is strong evidence that
ELF and RF/MW is associated with accelerated aging (enhanced cell
death and cancer) and moods, depression, suicide, anger, rage and
violence, primarily through alteration of cellular calcium ions and
the melatonin/serotonin balance."
8. What do we do about our concerns about these involuntary
exposures?
You mention the federal court case (Cellular Phone Task Force et
al. vs, FCC). That case is still with the U.S. Court of Appeals.
I have attached a press release (below) which describes the case.
Arthur Firstenberg's phone number is listed there -- 817-434-4499,
leave messages and he will contact you. The case is actually four
appeals which have been joined at by the federal court. Filing
similar appeals are the Ad Hoc Association of Parties Concerned
about the FCC's Health and Safety Guidelines, a group of citizens
and professional concerned about radiofrequency radiation,
representing 54 co-petitioners and, the Communications Workers of
America, a labor union which represents 400,000 telecommunications
workers. We are still awaiting the court decision. It has been a
record setting 8 months since the oral arguments in the 2nd
circuit, in New York. Any decision favoring the petitioner's
claims in this combined appeal will almost certainly be appealed by
the FCC and/or its intervenors at the Supreme Court level. We are
told that the telecommunications industry, the federal government
and the legal community is aware of and watching closely to see how
the court rules. The people are watching, too.
If I can be of further assistance, please contact me.
Best regards,
Libby
