All:
As you know, there are eighteen days remaining before we are faced with
whatever 01/01/00 will bring. I would like to take a moment to wish you all
a happy and healthy transition into the new year and beyond. I would also
like to suggest that now is the time to finalize your preparedness plans.
To that end, I offer the following suggestions which I consider to be the
most expedient in protecting the best interests of yourselves and your
families. Following these suggestions may range from moderately to
extremely difficult and are, obviously, at the reader's discretion:
1. Remove any cash assets from your checking accounts and be sure to obtain
an electronic statement clearly indicating your checking and savings
balances prior to 12-20-99. Store large amounts of cash in several secure,
readily accessible locations.
2. If practical, liquidate stocks, bonds and any other financial
instruments on or before the first sign of market instability. Whether you
invest in the market or not, monitor market activities very closely for the
remainder of this year.
3. If you live in or near a major metropolitan area, make plans or
reservations to stay with family, friends or in a hotel in a rural area for
at least the days of
12-31-99 and 1-1-00.
4. Service your vehicles now and keep your tanks full at all times until
after the end of the year. Keep at least minimal provisions for yourself
and each family member in your vehicle until after the end of the year.
5. Obtain any basic medical services, including dentistry, that you or your
family are likely to require for the next six months. Make the appointments
now and for as soon as possible.
6. Obtain the maximum allowable number of refills for any required
medications NOW! This is critical for anyone taking insulin or any other
life-dependent medication.
7. Complete any last minute inventory replenishment, including ammunition
for those who own fire arms and batteries for any portable appliances.
8. Gather and place in a secure location all vital family documents. These
should include birth and medical records, tax receipts and records,
property deeds and car titles.
9. On the evening of 12-31-99, fill all bathtubs and any empty vessel you
can find with water. If possible, on 11:00pm of this date, turn off the
electrical or gas service to your water heater and isolate (valve off) the
heater tank from the outside water system. If needed, water can be used
from this tank by draining it at the valve located on the bottom of the
tank. If you are unsure how to complete any of the above tasks, contact a
competent repairman or contractor.
10. If possible, obtain extra provisions for emergency heating and two way
communications.
11. If you plan to leave your residence unattended during this time, secure
it as much as possible against any event of civil unrest. Buy lots of plywood.
12. Stay OUT of airplanes and major cities between 11-31-99 and 1-2-00!!!!
Feel free to add whatever I haven't thought of to this list and pass it on
if you consider it appropriate.
