I'm not sure how we got onto this subject... Passover or Easter I presume. But
it seems to me that their is a great deal of pontification about evolution and
'non-evolution' by people who know little or nothing about geology or
archaeology.
First, evolution is not accurately described as a "theory", it is a hypothesis.
By definition, it cannot be replicated, at least on the macro level, although
microevolution happens billions of times daily with insects, plants, viruses
etc.
Second, the fossil record is very incomplete, and there is little hope of ever
finding a transitional species that lived for only a short time. Consider this
analogy. In your house you posses a copy of each and every recording ever
made-CD, tape, LP, wax impressions- every one going back to Edison. One day
your house catches fire. It stays there, untouched for a few years while
hurricanes, floods, and other natural processes turn it into a pile of rubble.
Now--- go look for those recordings. How complete of a picture of the entire
variability of recorded music will you be able to sample? Will some be in
better shape than others? What about the forms that 'died out' or had only a
few musicians and albums?
That's how the fossil record is... but convert that to a billion years and you
begin to see the problem of reconstructing a puzzle so vast and complex. It has
been said that we have only calculated 10-20% of all CURRENTLY living species on
the planet.
Creationists tend to argue that evolution is a religion, and that one cannot be
Christian, Jewish or even Muslim and believe in this conflicting religion. As
others here noted, evolution does not explain where life came from or how it
decided to take this evolutionary path. Technically, they are correct, if the
definition of religion is a system of beliefs, evolution is one. Scientific
method is one. It is a religion of searching for the truth, where most true
religions, the truth is told to you. I have never seen a problem with the two
coexisting, as these are different truths.
My last point is that name calling never solved anything, and is very
unprofessional. If you are on here to promote your personal philosophy and push
it on others, this is no place for you. If you are here to DISCUSS differing
viewpoints and ideas it most certainly IS for you.
