Yep. I also grew up in the 60s and remember the "Duck and Cover" drills.
I also remember that the U.S. had many more missiles pointed at the USSR,
installed just a few miles from the Russian border in countries like Turkey,
then the Russians ever installed or planned to install in Cuba.
The missiles in Turkey were a real thorn in the side of the USSR, and are the
reason why Kruschev decided to install missiles in Cuba. As part of the
resolution of the "Cuban Missile Crisis", JFK caused the majority of the
Turkish missiles to be removed.
