I'm 51. When my son was born, I was 20. I had a job that paid about ten
percent above minimum wage. I worked 12 hours a day, five days a week. I
made time and a half for over time. It came to about a hundred bucks a
week. It was plenty. My wife stayed home with the kid. We lived on
Manhattan in a one bedroom apartment. It cost $80.00 a month. It wasn't
the greatest neighborhood, but it wasn't the worst, either. We ate in
neighborhood restaurants two or three times a week and took in a show on
Saturday night. I still managed to bank five percent. I was not an
atypical bread winner.

Try that today.

Gasoline cost $.32. A new paperback was $.35. A half pound burger, made by
hand, one at a time, cost a buck. It came with a whole plate of fries, a
two and a half glass size milkshake (made with real milk) and eleven cents
change for the tip. Pizza was fifteen cents a slice. I bought a running
car for a hundred bucks. Coca-cola from a machine cost fifteen cents.
Phone calls cost a dime.

If this system is so great, how come economic life has been getting
steadily worse since before most people were born? If we are really in an
economic boom (as the media tells us) how come the typical couple works 70
hours a week to make ends meet?

I think these are not boom times, at least not for workers. I think that
the media lies.
