I am currently reasearching Giordano Bruno and Caravaggio--one a
theologist and philosopher; the other, a painter. Both lived in the
16th-17th century. Bruno was burned at the stake in 1600 for
refusing to recant his ideas about religion and the cosmos.
Caravaggio lived a little longer into the 17th century but died young
and violently. Caravaggio revolutionized painting, which was under
all sorts of rules and strictures of the Church by painting "from life"--
although he did paint religious subjects. Feeling we are coming into
such a time as they lived through. But with all our technological
and scientific advances it should be far stranger to have the PTB
try to take us back into the narrow paths of religion. Such a radical
polarization. A time of drawing in "the faithful" and driving the
infidels and non-believers out. Dangerous.
(In Caravaggio's time, they would regularly round up the poor and
troublesome and drive them out of the cities--Milan, Naples, Rome.)
