I presume you are really referring to the author of "Sherlock Holmes",
Arthur Conan DOYLE?
If so, in what writings did he refer to the 3 above-mentioned groups?
Strange that he would write about the mafia, when the mafia as such
didn't even exist in Doyle's day...and especially didn't exist under the
name 'mafia'...the closest you can come in Doyle's day is The Black
Hand...
In Doyle's day, organized crime was more likely to be run by gangs of
other ethnicities than Italian...foremost were the Irish, in both England
and the U.S., followed by gangs of Jewish/Eastern European background in
the U.S., primarily in the big eastern U.S. cities...
You could also find organized crime gangs of Portuguese in New England at
the turn of the century, and also gangs whose backgrounds were German and
gangs composed of Swedes...
Organized crime gangs of Italian descent didn't start gaining ascendency
in the U.S. until after the turn of the 20th century, mostly in the
teens. It was Prohibition in the 20s which really gave the Italian gangs
their foothold, and only in the U.S., since Great Britain never outlawed
alcoholic beverages....so one would have to wonder about Sir Arthur Conan
Doyle's supposedly writing about the American Mafia...
