The Land Grabbers are opening up a new front in the battle against private property rights and access to public lands! Their latest stunt is to attempt to control the freedom of speech of grassroots activists. SEE ACTION ITEM BELOW. You see, it seems that the grassroots has just been winning too many battles lately against the forces of Big Brother. The Land Grabbers hero, Al "Earth in the Balance" Gore, lost the election. Then property rights advocates were named to key spots in the President's Cabinet, like Gale Norton as Interior Secretary and Ann Veneman as Agriculture Secretary. Attempts to put liberals like John Turner in place to undercut the pro-property rights agenda were stopped cold. We are winning, so the Big Government gang wants to change the rules. They are now attacking your freedom of speech! They call it campaign finance "reform." It is legislation in Congress called HR 380, the "Shays-Meehan" bill. It is cosponsored by two radical environmentalist congressmen, Rep. Chris Shays of Connecticut and Rep. Marty Meehan of Massachusetts. This is the same Rep. Chris Shays who is sponsoring for the eighth consecutive year the Northern Rockies Ecosystem Protection Act. This radical land lockup proposes EIGHT massive new wilderness areas, biological connecting corridors, and a taxpayer financed new army of environmental police called the Wildland Recovery Corps. His sidekick, Rep. Marty Meehan, has a score from the League of Private Property Voters of 0%. ZERO. This guy NEVER votes with us on ANYTHING. Shays and Meehan are joined in support of HR 380, campaign finance "reform," by the leftwing New York Times editorial board, the Rockefeller family foundations, and the Pew Charitable Trust, which finances most of the environmental movement with multimillion dollar grants. Here is what HR 380 does: ***It Bans voter guides such as the League of Private Property Voters (LPPV) Vote Index, unless all its sponsors register with the Federal Election Commission, file endless reports, and face the threat of audit if they speak out too loudly against a powerful politician. For example, LPPV gave Congressman Billy Tauzin it's "Benedict Arnold Award" last year, for selling out land owners by sponsoring the 'CARA' Land Grab bill. If LPPV had been licensed and regulated by a federal agency at that time, it may have been slapped with an audit after behind the scenes pressure from Tauzin. This is not as far fetched as it sounds - remember all the organizations that were hit with audits and harassment from federal agencies after they criticized Hillary Clinton! ***It damages freedom of association to form coalitions, such as the Keep Private Lands in Private Hands Coalition. Any mention of support or opposition to legislation may be interpreted as support or opposition to the election of the legislator sponsoring the bill. This free speech would trigger federal registration and reporting requirements, especially if it was during an election year. Severe and unprecedented penalties, including jail time, are proposed for groups and individuals violating this thicket of new regulations. This will have a terrible effect on grassroots activists, most of whom are volunteers and cannot afford lawyers and the time to fill out endless forms. ***It bans political advertising 60 days before an election, but exempts the media from any restrictions. This means that the liberal media will have free reign to control the issue agenda of what voters see and hear for two entire months before an election! Dan Rather, CBS news anchorman and Democratic Party fundraiser, will go unchallenged. Radical environmentalist Ted Turner can cut loose CNN to attack property rights without response. The New York Times and the other elitist liberal outlets can use their newspaper chains and media conglomerates to promote their views - but if you carry a sign at a rally 59 days before an election, you have to register with the Federal Election Commission! WHY do the professional environmentalists, like the League of Conservation Voters, just LOVE these Shays-Meehan campaign finance freedom of speech restrictions? Here is why - because they have the money to pay for accountants and lawyers to register, file reports, and respond to audits - and you and I don't. The property rights movement is people and volunteer driven, and not financed by multimillion dollar foundation contributions. More regulations don't have much of an effect on the Big Green environmental establishment, but would be very damaging to the mom and pop grassroots property rights movement. You can click onto "Current Legislation" to send letters to your Member of Congress. There is a draft letter already on the site which you can use or change in any way you wish. The letter can be edited on the FINAL SCREEN before you send it out. FREEDOM IS NOT FREE!!! You must protect your freedom to speak out!
