The Sun is Setting on Zionism's Imperial Dream: The Lunatics are in Charge of the Asylum by Michael A. Hoffman II Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon is playing the stupid card of the lunatic wing of the Likud party. Sharon is not half as deadly as former Prime Ministers Shimon Peres or even Ehud Barak, who managed to incrementally steal more and more land in the occupied territories on behalf of the racist terrorists known as "settlers," without kindling the Palestinian's fight for freedom into a full-fledged intifada, as Sharon has done. The world watches in awe as the Middle East Goliath commits the latest daily outrage or atrocity--the invasion of a Lutheran Church and orphanage, the assassination of Palestinian politicians, missiles targeted at apartment blocs in crowded Palestinian cities "accidentally" doing "regrettable collateral damage" to women and children, etc. The Amen corner stateside have felt bold enough to engage in some rather malignant and shocking rhetoric to provide cover for Israeli war crimes. Former New York City Mayor Edward Koch, in an editorial essay in Newsday, held that the Israeli behemoth, with its nuclear stockpile and modern army bristling with napalm, rockets, helicopter gunships and F16s, is faced with "annihilation" from the Palestinians, with their stones and rifles, and that only "the courage of Sharon" and the Israeli army, has prevented the "annihilation" of the Jews. How delusional can you get? Hold on to your yarmulke: in an editorial in the Wall Street Journal, flagship publication of America's financial elite, editorial writer Hillel Halkin called for bombing, kidnapping and torturing Palestinians: "I can make careful use of the intelligence at Israel's disposal to identify, locate and kill...with minimal loss of innocent life, by such means as booby-trapping their telephones, rocketing their cars and offices, etc. In a word, assassinate them. Sounds good to me...hold a trial with the help of witnesses similarly abducted from the Palestinian territories. If necessary it (Israel) should apply physical pressure (a euphemism for torture) to these witnesses..." (cf. The Wall Street Journal, August 28, 2001, p. A14). And there's more: in a spine-tingling endorsement of the political murder of Palestinians, published in a full page editorial in Time, Charles Krauthammer penned an essay worthy of a publicist for Murder, Inc. Time magazine titled it, "In Defense of 'Assassination." The headline aptly summarizes Krauthammer's disgusting homicidal apologia (Cf. Time, Aug. 27, 2001, p. 32). Editorials such as these are perverse endorsements of the law of the jungle, of might is right and of the lowest and most barbaric jingoism. It has been a fundamental axiom of our civil polity since at least the 1960s and the assassinations of the Kennedys and Martin Luther King, that the murder of political leaders and activists is a shameful and heinous crime that unleashes irrational forces of retributive violence and sheer evil. We witness a great deal of hand-wringing in our society about the "breakdown of civility" as it pertains to rude sales clerks, boorish adolescents and the proliferation of inhuman muzak and video games, but what greater decline in human relations can one countenance than institutionalized murder, as practiced by Israeli assassins and funded by American taxpayers? The whacked-out Sharon goes from carnage to carnage like a longhorn steer run amok in a nursery school. The Machiavellian Peres and the pragmatic Barak knew how to put a human face on their land thefts and shootings. Bill Clinton was also able to finesse the Palestinians --via CIA asset Yasser Arafat -- into believing that America was an even-handed arbiter of Middle East peace. George W. Bush, who may be as intellectually challenged as Sharon, has dropped the facade, in keeping with his infatuation with the Likud. Sharon's violence highlights contradictions harmful to the prestige and stability of his allies. Israeli terror and occupation are tacitly supported not only by corrupt regimes in Egypt, Jordan, Morocco and the Gulf states, but also by governments in Europe, particularly in Germany and France, as well as Great Britain. As they do little more than engage in lawyerly critiques of Jewish genocide in Palestine, the disparity between the Europeans' callous inaction concerning contemporary mass murder in the "Holy Land," and their incessant penitential clamor over a Nazi "Holocaust" of 55 years ago, becomes more patently transparent in its political and financial motivations. Astute leaders know that one cannot defeat a people by a headlong rush, and this is especially so in the 21st century, with its portable camcorders and satellite video. Sharon, advised by counselors who themselves are smitten with the mumbo-jumbo of Kabbalistic rabbis, has tossed the clever old Socialist-Zionist chess board to the winds and grabbed instead for the long beards of rabbis who proclaim that these are Messianic times, which call for smiting the goyim to the utmost. Suffused with this mystic nonsense, (funneled into the Bush camp through press flak Ari Fleischer), Zionist political chess-play and cunning are diminished, though not extinguished. The lessons taught to America in Vietnam and to the Soviets in Afghanistan, are falling like gravestones on the fanatics now in control of the Israeli state, but they are too enamored of their magical amulet-wearing rabbinic soothsayers to get the message. It is true what the pessimists say, there will probably be no true peace in Palestine for a long time to come, but then the same could be said about Lebanon and Afghanistan, yet the militant Hizbullah predominates in Lebanon after winning a victory over the Israeli army, and the hardline Taliban rule 95% of the territory of Afghanistan, in spite of facing the combined might of Russia and America. Even the self-"Chosen People" cannot defeat a Palestinian nation that is fighting for their land, their faith and their families. The Likud policy is to escalate the violence, which in turn shreds Israelis reputations as surely as it weakens the Israeli tourist trade and economy. Yes, the Republicans in the U.S. will, if necessary, raid our Social Security trust fund to bear Israeli occupation costs, but money alone cannot win the war against the Arabs, only "Hashem" can do that, flying in on a kosher dill pickle from whatever Kabbalistic phantasmagoria the Likud and the settlers imagine such a deity inhabits. Meanwhile, lunatic Sharon and his lapdog in the White House mark the beginning of the end of the era of Zionist imperialism.
