The F.A.A. and the NTSB are lying to us...again.

They pretend they don't have a clue as to why
the vertical stabilizer fell off Flight 587 just
seconds before the stricken jetliner plunged into
Queens, NY last Monday.
Here's a quote from today's NY Times:
"Investigators have not determined the precise role
of the loss of the tail in the crash of American
Airlines Flight 587, but the F.A.A., said it was
"prudent" to study where the tail attaches to the
plane, and the hinges at the back of the tail that
attach the rudder. On the plane that crashed, the
vertical tail was torn away from the fittings that
attached it to the plane's spine.
The tail is made of a carbon fiber plastic composite,
which consists of hundreds of thin layers.
One possibility is that the layers had quietly begun
to come apart, a process called delamination, thereby
weakening the structure.
As a result, the F.A.A. has told the airlines to look
for cracked paint, surface distortions or other
surface damage that could signal delamination. The job
might require good lighting, mirrors and magnifying
lenses, the agency said.

More sophisticated techniques are available but not
commonly used. David P. Maass, an aviation engineer
and an expert on composites, said that one method was
ultrasonic testing..."  (Endquote NY Times)

What they are careful not to say is that
THE F.A.A. ORDERED ULTRASONIC TESTING ON THESE PLANES
LONG AGO!!

HERE IS THE PROOF!  (FLT 587 was a Model A320)
June 2, 2000 FAA issued AD 2000-11-27, Amendementment
39-11776 (65FR37029,June 13, 2000),
Applicable to certain Airbus models.  A319, A320, A321
to require a one-time ultrasonic inspection to depict
disbonding of the skin attachments at the stringers
and spars of the vertical stabilizer, and repair, if
necessary.  Must be completed within 60 days of June
28th 2000.
Must be reinspected every 60 days or 1100 cycles.

ACTION: Notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM).

SUMMARY: This document proposes the supersedure of an
existing airworthiness directive (AD), applicable to
certain Airbus Model A319, A320, and A321 series
airplanes, that currently requires a one-time
ultrasonic inspection to detect disbonding of the skin
attachments at the stringers and spars of the vertical
stabilizer, and repair, if necessary. For certain
airplanes, that AD also requires prior or concurrent
modification of the vertical stabilizer to ensure
proper reinforcement of its attachment to the skin.
This action would require ultrasonic inspections of
the subject area, and repair, as necessary. It would
also require installation of fasteners to reinforce
the bonds to the skin, which would terminate the
repetitive inspections. This proposal is prompted by
issuance of mandatory continuing airworthiness
information by a foreign civil airworthiness
authority. The actions specified by the proposed AD
are necessary to prevent failure of the bonds of the
vertical stabilizer spar boxes to the skin, which
could lead to reduced structural integrity of the spar

So now they are telling the airlines to look
for cracked paint???
Some people ought to go to prison for this!
