Without their consent, they were exposed to diseases during their military service as part of biological warfare testing. The unlucky servicemen were all Seventh Day Adventists, chosen because their religious beliefs require the devout to abstain from smoking, drinking alcohol or coffee. The Army believed that this would allow them to get a more accurate picture of the effect of the drug on their system. The program was called, "Operation Whitecoat" took the information gained from their study of the otherwise healthy, white men and applied it as the foundation of today's biological warfare program that we have today. According to an Army immunologist, it is this information that has proved so vital during the current crisis. No life-threatening diseases were transmitted but some debilitating ones were, such as the mosquito-borne sand fly fever. Researchers also tested a vaccine for Eastern encephalitis. Although no one died during the operation, the Army is now conducting a study of the long-term effects on nearly a thousand of the volunteers they have been able to locate. Source: AFP ============================================================ - DON'T OPEN THE ATTACHMENT DEPARTMENT - Goner Computer Worm Not A Goner Yet The so-called "Goner" Internet worm was still infecting computers in the United States this week, after wreaking havoc there and in Europe on Tuesday, but was leaving Asia relatively unscathed, software security experts told Reuters on Wednesday. After slowing down overnight, the worm was making a bit of a comeback, Michael Callahan, director of marketing for McAfee.com told Reuters. The company's online scanning service on Tuesday encountered a peak of 21,000 Goner worms per hour around 3 p.m. PST, he added. After dropping sharply overnight, the number began picking up at 6 a.m. PST on Wednesday and spiked up to 36,000 per hour between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. It then dropped down the next hour to less than 3,000 and was rising to about 5,000, an hour later. Mark Sunner, chief technology officer of UK-based e-mail security outsourcer MessageLabs Inc. told Reuters that his company was seeing a total of about 80,000 infections worldwide in 19 countries, with the United States, Great Britain, France and Germany hit the hardest. The worm spreads through ICQ instant messaging and Internet Relay Chat programs, but primarily through e-mail software in Microsoft Corp. Outlook and Outlook Express, but not Outlook 2002. The e- mail has an attachment masquerading as a screen saver that when opened up sends the worm to everyone in the e-mail address book, deletes anti-virus and firewall software and installs a back door that could enable future hacking, experts added. According to the Reuters report, the worm, a self- propagating virus, spread so quickly and widely on Tuesday that some anti-virus vendors warned it could be the biggest outbreak since last year's "Love Letter" virus. The "Love Letter" worm caused an estimated $8.7 billion in damage, according to Computer Economics, which tracks the economic toll of computer viruses. The "Goner" worm heavily impacted corporate and home users in the United States and Europe, but countries in the Asia- Pacific region were much less affected, except in Australia, experts continued. "The worm didn't hit Asia as hard as most people expected it would," April Goostree, virus research manager for McAfee.com told Reuters. Trend Micro officials in Asia attributed that partly to less use of Outlook, ICQ and IRC in that region, but Goostree and others told Reuters it was mostly due to timing. Anti-virus "updates got out around the world and more or less beat the clock," Ian Hameroff, business manager of security solutions at Computer Associates International Inc told Reuters. "It's still in the wild and it's still spreading," Raimund Genes, European vice president of sales marketing for Trend Micro told Reuters. Trend Micro recorded 38,000 computer workstations and 80,000 e-mail networks around the world had been affected as of 0900 GMT, Genes added. One Trend Micro customer had to purge 50 infestations from its e-mail network per hour on Wednesday morning, he continued. Experts told Reuters that there were signs Goner's infestation was slowing, but that it was likely to persist into next week. An anti-virus consultant for Sophos Anti-Virus in the UK added that it was likely that the number of Goner victims would be in the hundreds of thousands before it disappeared from view. Anti-virus software firms hastily designed an antidote on Tuesday to contain the worm. "It's not a complex one," Trend Micro's Genes said of Goner. Security experts told Reuters that Goner's uncomplicated coding and the fact it targeted some chat users led them to suspect the author was a teenager. Source: CNet ============================================================ - BIG, SCARY UFO DEPARTMENT - Gigantic UFO Seen Landing In Chile A colossal light with a blinding glare has caused a commotion among those who dwell in the vicinity of San Ramon hill, a large area which goes from La Florida to El Caijon del Maipo. Residents and ufologists alike are on alert after the wave of 17 sightings of unidentified flying objects seen in November over the sector. "UFOs are being seen again," note the experts. Jessica Serrano manages some tourist cabins in a place known as Los Rulos, on the way to Lagunillas. On November 16 at 22:00 hours, she was in the company of some friends at work when a white light emerged only meters away from the place. "It lit up everything, it was as big as a stadium. The light was reflected everywhere and was 15 minutes in the air before disappearing," she recalls. A few days earlier, some guests of the cabins where she works (an Israeli and a Cuban woman) fled their rooms in fear. "The guests were inside the cabin with the lights out and suddenly the place became lit by glaring light...they ran out in fear, yet there was nothing that could have caused that phenomenon," says Jessica. Lights in the Night Alberto Urquiza, a researcher with the GEO UFO group (Grupo de Estudios Ovnilogicos), notes that 17 sightings of unidentified flying objects were recorded between November 6 and the 25th in the pre-Cordilleran region. "These are large lights that descend to earth and remain suspended a short distance from the surface. The witnesses we've interviewed have seen them at some 100 meters distance. Some of the lights have remained suspended in mid-air between four and six hours," he says. Urquiza, who witnessed the phenomena on November 10th, stated that he received simultaneous phone calls regarding sightings from five communities of the Metropolitan Region which were seeing the same phenomenon that was occurring near the hill, in La Florida. "It was an intense white light that assumed a yellow- orange tone over San Ramon hill. It was possible to see an object lighting up with great power until a fog or mist appeared. At 00:30 hours, witnesses saw a large flash that was extinguished in a matter of seconds," explains the researcher. The ufologists verified that there were no unusual stellar alignments that evening, and that� there were no helicopters nor airplanes plowing the skies. "Planets have a movement of 15 degrees an hour and this object remained static for six hours. The radar on Cerro Colorado did not detect anything unusual and there were only a few flights scheduled for Argentina at Pudahuel airport. There were not helicopter flights taking place at the Tobalaba Airdrome," adds Urquiza. We are facing an unknown situation, states the ufologist, and this "occurs perhaps because there are very few people in the vicinity of the hill, or because UFOs actually want to let themselves be seen." Juan Soto was in the vicinity of Tobalaba with Walker Martinez this last November 10th at la Florida: "I saw four very bright objects in the sky after 22:00 hours. Three of them were over the Cordillera and another could be seen halfway up the mountains. They vanished quickly." Chilean Air Force Surprised The Committee for the Study of Aerial Phenomena (CEFAA), a dependency of the Chilean Air Force (FACh), is waiting to receive the material gleaned by the GEO ufologists in order to launch an official investigation into these sightings. Gustavo Rodriguez, the agency's secretary general, states that "it is surprising to speak of 17 sightings. We have never received word of anomalous phenomena in the area in question. SPACE.com: With regards to space exploration, are Russia and the United States closer than they've ever been, or is it all just PR? James Oberg: It's more than PR, it's a matter of absolute mutual interdependence. We designed the ISS on purpose to make it impossible to operate without the Russians, and the Russians know it. Meanwhile, practically the entire Russian space program -- plus tidy profits for top officials -- are funded from the West, a cash flow they don't want to interrupt for now. If they ever again get rich enough to fund their own space program themselves, we'll need them and they won't need us and that's worth worrying about. SPACE.com: It's a trying time for space exploration, especially as funding will be diverted for defense needs. How big an impact will this have on space exploration? See the full interview at: http://www.space.com ============================================================ - MORE MYSTERIOUS THINGS FROM THE SKY DEPARTMENT - Spain: Strange Object Punches Hole in Irrigation Ditch Object Opens a Meter Wide Crater in a Castellon Irrigation Experts claim not having enough information to state without a doubt that it was caused by a meteor. The Emergency Coordination Center of the Generalitat of Valencia reported yesterday that it found an aerolith which punched meter-wide crater in an irrigation ditch near the city of Castellon. According to sources in that city's government, the object would have been a meter in diameter and would have buried itself 70 centimeters deep. Josep Mar�a Trigo, astronomer and coordinator of the Bolide and Meteorite Investigation Network, showed great caution and claimed not having enough information to state unequivocally that the object was indeed a meteorite, since "having not seen it, I lack sufficient data to issue a verdict." The scientist was puzzled that the object's fall was not witnessed by more people, since meteorites produce considerable light and their crashing into the surface produces a loud report. The astronomer explained that the site where the object is supposedly located does not have signs of radiation or chemical residues in the water. Trigo was among the first experts to visit the location where a local resident claimed the object collided last Friday. Neither Radioactive nor Toxic Once the existence of the alleged aerolith became known yesterday through the Generalitat de Valencia's Emergency Center, a Guardia Civil (Spanish state police) bomb detonation squad headed to the site, subsequently discarding the possibility that the object was explosive. An expert in radiology and technicians from the Chemical/Biological/Nuclear Center also reported to the site, and were unable to detect the presence of radiation or chemical products. Trigo stated that efforts aimed at recovering the object by means of a backhoe are being hindered by the mud. The scientist forms part of a team of researchers from various Spanish research centers and universities who are taking part in a multi disciplinary effort aimed at tracking meteorites, bolides and space debris as it enters the atmosphere. Special Thanks to Gloria Coluchi. ============================================================ - HERE THERE BE MONSTERS DEPARTMENT - Monster Hunter Seeks Nessie There are hundreds of lakes in Scotland, but only one of them, Loch Ness, is known throughout the world. Submerged in its waters may be a dinosaur, popularly known as the Loch Ness Monster. Bob Rines has devoted much of his life pursuing Nessie, as this monster is affectionately called. If the man were a crackpot, this would not be news, but Bob Rines is anything but. At 79, he has a lifetime of awards and achievements as a scientist and a lawyer. Now, as Correspondent Scott Pelley reports, Rines is risking his reputation on hunting down a creature most of us believe does not exist. Growing up, Rines learned of all the monster stories, but never believed them. "How could there be a monster," this physicist asks. But now, he knows it' s all true. "I saw one," he says. Before giving Bob Rines a reality check, consider his background: he's a world-renowned patent attorney, a physicist and engineer whose groundbreaking work on sonar was used to find the Titanic. He's a professor at his alma mater, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he teaches a course on intellectual property. But 30 years ago, when Rines was touring Scotland, he saw the Loch Ness monster in the flesh. "I didn't want to stop looking at what I could not believe," he tells Pelley. "There in the middle of the Loch is the back of what, when we put the telescope and the binocs on it, looked like a giant elephant's back, and as we looked at it, we had 10 minutes, Scott. This isn't a fleeting kind of thing. We had 10 minutes. This lumbering thing turned around, gave us the wonderful spectacle of coming right back in front of us and submerged." A school of fish? Trick of the light? "That's what the people who've never seen it would say," Rines answers. The first report of a Loch Ness monster came in the year 565AD when an Irish missionary, visited the Loch, which is 24 miles long and in some places more than 800 feet deep. The missionary described an animal that he said broke the surface with a loud roar and an open mouth. Since then, there have been more than 1,000 alleged sightings, many of them describing Nessie as 20 to 30 feet long with an appearance very prehistoric. "I remain unconvinced that there is any large prehistoric air-breathing animal living in Loch Ness, says Dr. Angela Milner, paleontologist at the world famous British Museum of Natural History. "Science relies on having hard evidence and not second- hand reports, eyesight reports and hearsay," she says. "And until somebody actually comes up with some good hard scientific evidence that we can evaluate, it must remain just speculative." Bob Rines has spent the last three decades combing the Loch for just such evidence. And the more he tried, the more he realized that the only way to sway the skeptics was through a full-scale scientific assault. Last summer, he did that. His two-boat navy may not look like much, but it has enough high technology on board to make a camera-shy monster say "cheese." Side scanning sonar targets all large objects in it path. Then this ROV - a sub operated by remote control - hunts them down. The pictures it sends back to the mother ship are stunning. An underwater lunar landscape that whirls like a dervish, concealing walls of rock, craggy cliffs, and caverns that could be hiding places for the elusive Nessie. "I'm crazy, I'm crazy," says Rines. "You know Christopher Columbus, I'm nowhere near the great man he was, and he was told by all the people who knew everything about science, everything about geography, 'Don't go Chris, you're gonna drop off the end of the flat earth.' Sometimes too much knowledge prevents innovation. Prevents you from even looking." To do his looking, Rines is using the most advanced sonar in the world. His guide is Gordon Menzies, an engineer and a skeptical Scot who's convinced there's something strange down there. Why has there not been more evidence of it? "Unless you're pointing and looking at the right time, you've got no chance," Menzies says. According to international monster hunter Steve Feltham, those who do point and look are often misguided. Ten years ago, Feltham moved to a converted bookmobile on the shores of Loch Ness to look for the monster. In the process, he became a one-man repository of Loch Ness lore. Rines also relies on photography. He chose to try and film the monster underneath the spot where he saw her surface 30 years ago. In 1972, Rines installed an underwater sound stage there. Whenever a big object passed by, sonar would trigger the lights and start the camera, which was programmed to roll at one frame every 45 seconds. Rines got pictures of fish, but not much else. Then in 1975, something strange swam into view. "I could see black water, black water, black water, black water, hundreds of them, " he says. "All of a sudden one frame, bang. There's something which immediately, it looks like this, a head, a neck, and an underbody. Only in one frame. Next frame black water, black water, black water. So in 45 seconds something passed the camera and has that shape. And that is why I feel that, impossible as it sounds, this is a carryover of something that should have been dead 65 million years ago." Rines has always believed that the picture resembles a plesiosaur, an aquatic, air-breathing dinosaur. Dr. Milner, who's looked at the picture, says that's just not possible. "Loch Ness is an enclosed fresh water lake which has only existed for 5000 years," she says. "The last known plesiosaurs, which were marine animals, died out 65 million years ago. It doesn't seem scientifically logical to me that any one of them could have survived." Rines says he will take whatever explanation science provides. "But in my mind," he says, "I have a strong conviction of what it was and I certainly would love the rest of the world to enjoy the thought that we don't know everything and some kind of a miraculous carryover was in this lake." On one of his sojourns, he found something that looked like a "decaying or a decayed carcass and vertebrae and things of this sort" that fits the description of what "paleontologists have told us we might expect to see after many years of rotting." Rines, the ultimate realist, won't know unless he is able to bring part of it up. But based on his own experience, Steve Feltham won't discount the possibility: " I can't dismiss the hundreds of eye witnesses that I've spoken to," Feltham says. "I can dismiss some of them, but I can't dismiss them all." A 60 Minutes II crew spent a week searching Loch Ness with Rines. He was trying to locate that carcass he'd seen earlier so he could scoop up part of it using a garden net he'd fastened to the ROV. He couldn't find it. Upon returning from that visit to Scotland, a dejected Rines was reviewing a videotape of the lake that was taken from land. on a windless night with no boats of any kind in view. "This is a massive wake in a flat calm bay with some object here that is propelling itself at a substantial velocity, throwing up quite a bit of bubbles in the back," he says. "I think it may be one of those things we've been searching for." Perhaps. And perhaps not. But at least, it's given Rines enough renewed vigor and encouragement to go back and find out what that is. Five other villagers in Corguinho, south-west Brazil, also say they witnessed the crash. Farmer Getulio Alves says the explosion burned nearby trees but police say they haven't found any evidence. Maria Lucia Vidal de Souza, from the Doorway Project which provides UFO information to tourists, is heading the investigation. She told O Estado de Sao Paulo: "The blast happened in a hard-to-reach place, we still haven't found the wreckage, but soon we'll find it and prove it's all true." Source: ANANOVA ============================================================ - OBITUARIES DEPARTMENT - Rosemary Brown, Spirit Medium For Top Composers Rosemary Brown, who as a middle-aged widow living in a London suburb in the 1960s said she had been in paranormal contact with history's most illustrious composers, offering as evidence hundreds of piano miniatures that she said Beethoven, Bach and others had "dictated" to her, died on Nov. 16 in London. She was 85. The odd experiences she described -- which included shopping with Liszt (he was interested in the price of bananas) and watching television with Chopin (he was appalled) -- found a resonant audience in the era of the Beatles and flower power. More intriguingly, they attracted expert scrutiny and some approbation from such luminaries as Leonard Bernstein, along with tidal waves of more or less good-natured ridicule from most of the music establishment. Mrs. Brown's credibility as a medium was buttressed by her own musical ignorance. She had just three years of piano instruction and could not play by ear or extemporize. There was no record player or radio in her home and she said she never went to concerts. "I seemed to lose control of my hands; it was as though someone were guiding them," she said of the first time she received a piece of music from Liszt. Peter Katin, an outstanding interpreter of Chopin, was pleased to record many of the piano works, while the composer Humphrey Searle published an essay noting the similarity of Mrs. Brown's Liszt pieces with his later official compositions. Mr. Bernstein suggested he could "buy," meaning accept, a piece by Rachmaninoff, but not much else. Andre Previn, then conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra, said that if the newfound compositions were genuine, they would best have been left on the shelf. But the British composer Richard Rodney Bennett seemed entirely convinced, at least at the time. He said that when he was having trouble with a composition of his own, Mrs. Brown passed along Debussy's recommendation. It worked. "If she is a fake, she is a brilliant one and must have had years of training," he said in an interview in Time magazine. "Some of the music is awful, but some is marvelous. I couldn't have faked the Beethoven."
