It doesn't matter if one knew, or even suspected, that the shoe would explode; the guy was acting irrationally, and that should be enough to raise an alarm. I don't know about you, but I wouldn't want to wait to see if he moved on from burning an item of clothing to trying to set the seats on fire, and I surely wouldn't want to spend the flight smelling the recycled smoke of burning shoes, seat cushions, etc.

I think if I or anyone else on this list had been on that plane, we would have done exactly the same thing to subdue the guy, whether just a nut or a suicide bomber. It's too late after you wait to see if the shoe is going to explode.
And how would you know his show would explode? Before this incident this sort of thing was unheard of...now it makes the coverup of the recent crash over New York even more sinister.
