What is being symbolized is that race is NOT important, that it wasn’t just white guys saving white guys from dying – but that heroic Americans put their lives on the line to help anyone who needed it at that moment of pain.
No matter which side wins in this battle of representations, hard feelings will continue to exist. This does not bring people together. I think you are seriously underestimating the emotions being generated over this issue.
