There's various fallback stuff xlib does with loading fonts.  And if
you've got 'em spec'd like in the default config (with a bunch of
*'s), or just with trailing bits left off, I believe it winds up
loading different sets for different charsets anyway, which would
probably explain things.

XLFD - 2.5/4 letters are accurate, and that's a pretty good average!
