I assume you mean one character size.  Is that to the right, down, or
both?

I'll see if I can figure it out.  I don't recall anything like that in
my tests, but then I used aterm, not xterm (if that makes a
difference).

When you type in that xterm, can it use that extra space, or is that
extra space like some kind of one character size inside border?
