Gnome maitains a list of tasks to be performed upon session
initiation. First in the list (priority 10) is starting the window
manager. At priority 40 is starting the panel, priority 50 is starting
the applets and other tools, and so on.

When I substitute ctwm for gnome-wm, ctwm is started first, then the
startup pauses for a full 3 minutes, and then the rest of the tasks
are started. Apparently, the session manager is waiting for something
that gnome-wm does and that ctwm does not.
Any ideas what?

Any ideas how to avoid the 3 minute delay?
