Your curl version was relased in November 2009 so thus much older than this
mailing post you refer to. Chances are things have changed to the better since
both your version was released and the 2012 mailing list post was made.
Back in those days you needed to ask curl to "tunnel through" the proxy with
--proxytunnel - these days curl does it automatically when a proxy is used
with non-http/ftp protocols:
