Once I switched to "Bridged adapter", I got normal results (as in,

Looking at the source code for VirtualBox it appears that the NAT mode
is built on top of lwIP 1.4.1 so the limitation may come from there.
I chat with the VirtualBox devs on IRC from time to time and am happy to
ask them specific questions if it would help.
