The various BSD-licensed projects out there all have similar problems.
I haven't found one that tries to solve it by listing all the copyright
holders in one place yet.

FreeBSD tend to put a copy of the BSD license at the top of each source
file, with one or more copyright notices. Sometimes the copyright
notice is the original UCB one, other times it is the original
individual who authored the file. Presumably anyone making a binary
closed distribution of FreeBSD would have to take the union of all of
these copyrights and put them in the "accompanying material" in order to
comply with the copyright - but the FreeBSD project doesn't facilitate
this by keeping all the copyrights in one place.

Here's a suggestion. Let's modify the BSD license (shock!) to replace
the phrase "the above copyright notice" with "all apropriate copright
notices", and leave the copyright notices in the source files.

How does that sound?

Cheers,
        Simon
