I'm not sure either. You gave good reasons for prefering binaries; the
main advantage I see for a library is that we will get the same
behaviour on all platforms.

I would say the (L)GPL is one of the most widely used and
*mis*understood software licences in the world.

I believe a large proportion, perhaps even the majority, of people using
it believe you can't sell GPLed software, for example.
