Robert, Et al;

I have used Mister House on Linux. It's pretty useful. It is pretty
complex too. I've tried to edit the config files to include my modules,
but it never worked quite right. I used the web gui to add my modules
with much greater success.

I was also able to configure a Jabber client interface so I could chat to
Mr House to check status, change lighting, etc.

x10 is the protocol. A wide array of modules control centers cameras,
sensors, etc, are available. www.x10.com, homecontrols.com, etc.

I use simple lamp and appliance modules so I didn't have to replace all
my receptacles and switches. Lighting seems to be the low hanging fruit.
Once it is set up, you really don't even need the software. I have an RF
receiver plugged into the wall, and with an RF remote, my spouse can
turn lights on/off.

Funny this came up - I have ordered a Harmony programable remote (L688)
(understands X10) and an IR to RF converter so my spouse can control the
planet from a single remote. Wish me luck.

Cheers;

E!

P.S. sorry I missed Sundays meeting.....

> I would like to do some simple home automation; real simple. Turn a
light on and off with my PC using FLOSS. I'm imagining that is should
be something relatively simple: the X10 device plugs into the wall
outlet. The lamp plugs into the X10 device's output power. The PC
connects to the X10 device using USB (or other?). In diagram form:
>
>    power outlet === X10 device === lamp
>                        |
>                     PC w/USB
>
> One then sends commands to the X10 device from the PC to turn things on
and off. Am I close? The questions I have are, what X10 device do I
need to get? Where do I get it? What software? Where do I get it?
What interface, e.g. is it USB or can it be ethernet or WiFi?
