I have used Mister House on Linux. It's pretty useful. It is pretty

I was also able to configure a Jabber client interface so I could chat to
Mr House to check status, change lighting, etc.

Cool. So, I should be able to control lights with FLOSS. My idea is to hook up the X10+light+pc at a home and then ssh into the box (from say Bread Co.) to turn it on or off. I figure if I can do that, then I can pretty much powercycle anything: a remote box, cable modem, router, etc. I don't need the RF part of X10. USB/ethernet would be fine.

Funny this came up - I have ordered a Harmony programable remote (L688)
(understands X10) and an IR to RF converter so my spouse can control the
planet from a single remote. Wish me luck.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.
