Directly supported my 1GB network card, SATA controller and ATI vidcapture. So far so good. I'll let the dust settle a bit and then try out other stuff.
*Despite being text based, the installer is a real joy. I even like it over Anaconda. I'll have some CDs made for tonight's AdvLUG meeting if anyone is interested.

That's the problem with Debian. There's always a next because getting a fully working system is like pulling teeth. ~ ;)
That's been my experience in the past. I'm hoping that Sarge with the 2.6 kernel will be less so. We've had excellent fortune with Red Hat and Fedora Core, so I don't see switching any time soon. But it's nice to have another distro as a backup plan.
BTW, if you are running Debian on VirtualPC, add vga=791 to your kernel options in the /etc/grub/menu.lst file. It makes the screen much more viewable and usable. I discovered this option by booting Knoppix and then typing:
$ cat /proc/cmdline
which lists the command line options passed from the bootloader (e.g. grub) to the kernel.
