questions are good. you'll learn things.

it seems though that you don't yet have the vocabulary to ask the most
succinct questions yet. Maybe I can help.

It looks like you are wanting to RECOMPILE the Linux kernel to include
support for some new devices/features. There are two BRANCHES of the
kernel 2.4 and 2.6 but many RELEASES from each branch. Furthermore,
each vendor, like RedHat, takes the releases from kernel.org and
CUSTOMIZES them as part of building a distribution (distro) like Fedora.

The way you have asked the question lead Robert to understand that you
want to build an entire Linux distro. Hence the gentoo suggestion
(www.gentoo.org). That doesn't seem like the case but is also quite a
learning experience.

The second question is good and the answer is 'you probably should not
be using RedHat 9'. It is old and i think unsupported. It is better to
move to Fedora if you can. or any of the other hundreds of Linux
distros available. If you are trying to get hardware to work then you
should try out live CDs first like: Knoppix, Ubuntu live, or Mepis.
