I'm planning on doing this eventually, but I don't
have an old computer lying around, and for now I want
to get something faster than my old dell laptop whose
cd burner doesn't even work.

No, the only thing that's been affected is the
external drive. I'm going to reformat it in reiser, at
least to back up the laptop. I'm using kanotix
2005-03, and I finally got a copy of 2005-04 which I'm
now going to install.

You mentioned that reiser is known for getting
corrupted, should I maybe choose another file system?
When I get the mac I guess I'll put HFS+ on it - I'm
assuming that's the mac native filesystem - but can I
use that in linux? I mean now if I plug it into my
linux laptop's usb connection. Apropos does turn up
some HFS commands, including hformat.

In another mac/linux compatability question, will I be
able to sync the linux laptop and mac with rsync or
another tool? rsync is what I've been using to backup
my laptop to the hard drive.

Thanks again for the suggestions.
