Of all the Linux filesystems available, Reiser is simply the most 
experimental. I know SuSE and other distributions use it by default. 
For backing up your files, you might consider something else for the 
simple reason that you have already been burnt once before.

The Linux HFS+ driver is alpha at best- much like the NTFS driver.

You will have trouble backing up from HFS+ to a different filesystem, 
not because it isn't possible, but because it is difficult to do it 
right. Even if you do manage to properly back up the meta-data, you 
still have to test the restoration. Also note that the generic rsync 
will not work properly on OS X. Either use Apple's patched rsync or 
rsyncX (which includes a Cocoa wrapper around the rsync options).
