Ouch.  "ad-hoc install-fest" is a good description of what we are  
doing.  The machines will all have a minimum CPU, RAM, and HDD specs,  
but could vary considerably.  Same is true for graphics, modem, NIC,  
and sound.  We work with the parts we got.
