By default ext3 does ``safer'' journaling than default reiser, xfs, and jfs settings: http://www.redhat.com/support/wpapers/redhat/ext3/#speed This can be a major factor in the difference in performance. If you alter the journaling options on ext3 to be more like the default setup on the other journaled filesystems, its performance becomes comparable to the others.
