i already had Flip4Mac installed, and now i've duly installed Perian. but that
don't help for flac.

the apps you mention don't support flac, although they mention ogg. i've played
around a little bit with whamb and like it well enough.

on versiontracker i found the ripper i've been using, max
http://sbooth.org/Max/#download

but i haven't found much that plays flac other than
http://cogosx.sourceforge.net/

i've got the newest xiph installed. nevertheless, it doesn't play flac, or
oggflac. I found this in the forums which points to binary snapshot that i
haven't yet tried (and which appears to only work with oggflac and not regular
flac)

https://trac.xiph.org/ticket/912

there is also this page
http://barelyfocused.net/blog/2006/10/12/native-flac-in-itunesquicktime/

which doesn't seem too promising, and may not even work at all in itunes, just
in quicktime, but I haven't had a chance to try it yet either.

i tried one of the apple scripts awhile ago, and it didn't make any difference.
i still haven't checked out the other one.

the problem with using the file system and dragging is that i like to be able
to search by genre, random play, etc, that amarok (and itunes for that matter)
are designed for. this is also the problem with cogosx, whamb. otherwise i
would probably just stick with vlc, which works fine and is open source.

tks,

ned

when it comes to codecs & mac os x, install this plugin:

Perian

and also this one:

Flip4Mac (you'll find it on MSFT's site)

with those, you can play just about everything.

now, as for music management, to be honest, i just use the file system &
drag music into my player.

as for players, have you tried this:

http://www.panic.com/audion/
http://whamb.com/?heading=overview&lang=en
http://joggplayer.webarts.bc.ca/ (hideously ugly java-based player)

or you could look here, at a list of software with the keyword "ogg"
tracked by VersionTracker:

http://www.versiontracker.com/php/search.php?mode=basic&action=search&str=ogg&srchArea=mac%7Cosx&x=0&y=0

as for flac, i presume you've looked at

http://www.xiph.org/quicktime/

which says:

08.05.2006 - XiphQT 0.1.5 released

What's new in this release? Intel Mac compatibility (finally!), FLAC
decoder, fresh (and still warm!) Theora decoder and a number of bug
fixes and other smaller changes - see the release notes for details.

also, did you try the applescripts mentioned here:

http://www.xiph.org/quicktime/faq.html#faq_itunes_metadata

let us know what you find out & what you do (& btw, i haven't yet tried
to get amarok installed on my mac, since i play all my music through my
linux box, as you know).
