There doesn't seem to be anything like that with the graphical Qemu 
launcher, weirdly.  But I finally figured it out with the help of 
the instructions on this page:

Seemed I needed to create a vmdk image file, run the installer, then 
launch it.  Previously I just created a regular img file.  Not sure 
if that doesn't actually work because I may have been doing 
something else wrong, but it works now.  I've got FreeBSD running.
