Reinstalling firefox after deleting the profile worked.
The ubuntu-eee I installed uses the netbook remix interface which I generally like quite well. It does appear to be a little flaky though (i.e. sometime a launcher / icon is missing -- also panel items are sometimes duplicate or missing.) Robert do you use the NBR or the regular gnome desktop?
