What were your search terms? I did a search using the following terms: insert special characters openoffice and got this as my first link: Title: [PDF] How to Handle Special Characters in OpenOffice.org URL: http://tinyurl.com/6shqul See the section titled: "Using the AutoCorrect Replace List". Basically, in Writer go to Tools > AutoCorrect, and in AutoCorrect window, click on the "Replace" tab. There are a few default ones and it looks like you can add new ones when needed (I haven't tried adding any additional characters). Then in your document you can "code" your symbols. For example, typing (c) will turn that into a copyright symbol. Etc. Hope that works for you.
