You need the compiz fusion icon from Synaptic, so you can turn compiz off
when you use Google Earth. It will install under
applications> system tools.  When you start it an icon shows in the upper
right hand panel. A right click will let you choose metacity instead of
compiz.  Select it and start Google Earth.

That will solve the video problem.  However, I've had a few problems with
turning compiz back on after leaving Google Earth.  It freezes up the system
about 50% of the time.  But control-alt-backspace solves that.
