The problem with a virtual terminal is 1) the system sometimes becomes
completely unresponsive, 2) I don't know what it is I am looking for (it
could be metacity, compiz, some sub-process of which I'm not even aware, the
compiz-fusion icon itself, or even some third party software I installed and
uninstalled like Emerald, and 3) ctrl-alt-Bkspc lets me know how
unresponsive the system is. Sometimes even ctrl-alt-Bkspc doesn't work and
I have to hold the power button in for a few seconds to close it down.

//There's a bug in there somewhere.
