I downloaded the .deb and tried installing.  dpkg refused to install
it as the existing version had to be removed first.

This is what I went with.  VBox was a bad example in that there are
repositories for it and works well with apt-get.  I was more curious
about what happens if you just download a .deb and try to install it.

BTW, I agree with the sources.list.d suggestion.  I find that method
much easier to manage than editing the sources.list file.
