Robert, I actually had to install VBox from the .deb package because I couldn't get the repository version running on Ubuntu 8.04. Remember to make the download executable before trying to install.
Having just found out that VMware doesn't support serial ports unless that serial port is exclusively used by a printer, I wonder if VBox does. In my case the serial port was to be used by a software key and a printer. I suspect that VBox doesn't either.
