did any of the cybershooters spot my letter in the DT last week? I was
away, and I have already unsubscribed in order to avoid being flooded with
messages whilst away in Germany and Russia for 8 weeks. Just in case, here
it is.

My letter to the Editor of the Daily Telegraph, published 4 July 2000:

        ARMED AND FREE

Sir - The key point of all the comparisons by the CBS
correspondent Tom Fenton (report, July 29) should not be whether
the United States has a few more murders and rapes or Britain a
whole lot more robberies and burglaries. The key point, surely,
is that most American citizens have the choice to avail themselves
legally of the means to defend themselves against crime - means
that British citizens are denied (some would argue,
        unconstitutionally) by their nanny state.

I was able to make that choice two years ago when I toured western
America by motorbike: I had on me a (perfectly legal) handgun
throughout the six weeks of travelling. I never needed it, but the
simple experience of being able to choose if you want to defend
yourself in an emergency was a profoundly liberating one. Nobody
who has experienced that basic freedom will ever consider Britain
        a truly free country.

                                                        HEINRICH HARKE
                                                        Earley, Berks
