Armed man in raid on garage

A GUNMAN was being hunted today after holding up
a garage in a terror attack.

The masked thug burst in and bundled the terrified
woman cashier into a storage room.

He then grabbed takings from the till of the
Bewicke Service Station on Bewicke Road, Wallsend, just
before 8pm last night and ran off towards Armstrong Road.

The 40-year-old woman was left unhurt but badly
shaken by her ordeal.

Today, as police hunted the man who was armed
with a black handgun, they appealed for help.

They said the man was white, between 5ft 8ins and
5ft 10ins, of slim build and he had brown hair.

He was wearing a petrol blue hooded coat and a
scarf with eye holes cut in it pulled over his face.

Det Insp Phil Butler said: "We believe this man
acted alone as he arrived on foot and there was no
vehicle involved.

"I would appeal for anyone who lives nearby and
who saw a man running off, wearing a blue hooded coat
to make contact with us.

"The woman attendant got a very nasty fright
from the incident.''

= Anyone who was near the garage at the time of
the attack should contact police on (0191) 214 6555,
ext 63346.
