The following from Speer's Reloading Manual may be handy extra information:
Two new cartridges were developed for the (Winchester) 94 AE (Angle Eject).
The 307 and the 356 Winchester have the same external dimensions as the 308
and 358 Winchester, respectively, with the exception of the rims. The new
cartridges have the same rim diameter as the 30-30, making the cases
semi-rimmed. Pressure levels for both newcomers were established at 52,000
cup.
The walls of the 307 case are thicker than those of the 308 Winchester,
reducing case capacity. WHEN LOADING THE 307 WINCHESTER, YOU MUST NOT USE
308 WINCHESTER DATA. FOLLOW PUBLISHED 307 LOADS TO THE LETTER. (original
emphasis)
It then goes on to say that it is ballistically nearly equivalent to the 308
(with a 20" barrel, it lists a mv of around 2,600 fps with a 150 g bullet),
and can be used on the same type of game. Also, it does indeed warn not to
use anything but flat point bullets in tubular magazines.
It also mentions that Marlin used to produce 307 rifles as well as
Winchester, but that they had ceased to do so.
It finishes off with:
"Fans of traditional lever-action rifles who are seeking modern game
performance would be hard-pressed to beat the 307 Winchester."
Personally, I would be far more interested in the game performance of a
7mm-07 (I am certainly no fan of .30 dia. bullet performance on game out of
.308 sized cases. My personal .30 bullet dia. bias is for a minimum of the
case capacity of the 30-06 ). Now a 7mm version (an updated 7-30 Waters
with up to 12,000 more cup available, and ballistics equivalent to the
7mm-08?), that could be a very, very
interesting and versatile lever-action . . . . Though Speer don't do Flat
Point bullets in 7mm.

Hmm, I wonder if a .307 Model 94 could be converted to a box feed
.308. That could be interesting.
