.308s are legal here, but there is a quirk in Spanish law
so that they cannot have semi-auto .308s, so they have
FALs for example in .307. We can't have centrefire
semi-autos at all. I was just wondering if it were
possible to take a Model 94 in .307 and convert it
to a box-fed .308, but in reality it makes more sense
just to get a .308 BLR and adapt it to use M14 mags
or something similar.
Steve.
Steve,
I am sure that certain people would want
to fit a turbo charged diesel engine to a knitting
machine, possibly in the hope of producing chain
mail <G> however, for those interested in realities
perhaps the following is of interest.
The .307 Win cartridge, being rimmed and
therefore more tapered than a rimless cartridge such
as .308/7.62 x 51mm would require a highly curved
magazine which is also tapered in width towards the
front (look at a SMLE or a .303 BREN mag.) Rimmed and
belted rounds are in any event far more problematic to
feed from a straight or a staggered stack magazine.
Notwithstanding that the BLR is offered
chambered for even .300 Win Mag! I certainly wouldn't
fancy that, however we have converted .308's and .243
BLR's to larger capacity detachable box mags where the
customers have insisted. The .223 BLR conversion to our
'PR' system using Ruger detachable box mags, works
extremely well in all respects, especially with
our de-coupled 1 in 9 twist Heavy Varmint profile,
optionally fluted, match barrel installation. However,
in the heavier calibres and the special compound angled
mags that are needed to feed .308, .243 etc to avoid the
lever ploughing in to the rear of the mags and similar
problems, frankly I strongly discourage people to
follow that route.
In France, where for many years military
calibres have been classified in a more restricted
category where only a limited number may be held on
a normal French Firearms Authority, they preferred
magazine fed 7.62 x 51's (.308's) to be chambered for
.300 Savage and .223's to be chambered for .222 Rem or
.222 Rem. Mag., the latter being a longer case than
a .223 Rem.
