I was reading through a Spanish gun magazine today, and I
was fascinated to read about a rifle being sold there in
.307 Winchester.

Spain has a law banning modern military-style semi-autos in
military calibres, so you either have it converted to
straight-pull or have it in a non-military calibre.

There's a company there that has started importing old
Austrian FALs (Stgw 58) and converting them to .307
Winchester. I assume this is because it is much less
expensive to convert the barrel to this calibre than
.243 which is the usual calibre they use for these
conversions in France.

Because it's a rimmed round, the mag will only work
as a 4+1 capacity.

I have to admit I'd never heard of .307 Winchester before,
and after doing a quick search on the web I discovered that
it was only chambered briefly in the Model 94. Winchester
still turns out small lots of ammo to order (presumably
most of it goes to Spain!)

What was particularly fascinating to me is that it has
the same length as .308 Winchester and is a very similar
round in terms of dimensions.

Does anyone know more about it? I assume it was a failed
experiment like 9x23mm a few years ago.

Anyone ever fired a .307?

Steve.
