Some help please
I currently have two S1 shotguns on my FAC. Our range is has been
cleared by the MOD for shotgun use. I have just received a letter
from my police force informing me that they believe that the
ranges may not be safe, that they must be inspected by a suitably
qualified person and permission hasn't been granted for them to
inspect. I have been informed that I must return my FAC for
amendment. In addition to this the conditions on my FAC state
that the S1 shotguns may only be used for practical target
shooting as a member of the UKPSA on 1) Range in which a
certificate has been issued.(Which I thought wasn't possible).
b) Over a course of fire approved by a duly qualified member
go the UKPSA on land over which the holder has permission to
shoot that class of fire arm.
I need some advice since I feel that the person who issued
this letter is very much against practical shotgun from
comments he has made in the past and I think that this is
a cynical way of removing my S1 shotguns from my certificate.
It was my understanding that you can shoot a shotgun over
any land you have permission on, is this different for S1
also can I appear again this and if so how.
TIA
David

What is a "suitably qualified person"?
The condition on your FAC about approved MoD ranges refers to
the use of slugs, ranges can be approved for the use of shotgun
slugs.
The short answer is yes, you can shoot a shotgun over any
land you have permission to shoot on, but when it comes to
Section 1 firearms the police do sometimes want to check
the land. Although I have to say I thought this was more
for rifles than for shotguns, the police don't do this
for Section 2 shotguns so I'm not sure what the problem
could be, especially as the piece of land in this case is
also an MoD approved range.
You could always specify some other ground you intend to
shoot over to get around this, e.g. Minsterley ranges
or something. Unlike rifles and muzzle-loading pistols
there is no requirement to be a member of a club in order
to possess a Section 1 shotgun, you can specify almost
anywhere.
This is a bit bizarre because I have never specified any
land I want to shoot over, I'm a member of UKPSA so I'm
going to shoot over whatever land the club happens to
be using that day, I have no idea until I enter the
comp.
Basically a case in point as to why Section 1 controls
on shotguns should be opposed.
Steve.
