Yes the warning is still in the current Bible in Appendix 14 on page
1/75 and it is worth emphasising that the warning is in respect of
commercial .308Win ammunition in rifles chambered for 7.62NATO.
However, in case of 5.56X45 NATO ammunition the warning is against its
use in commercial rifles chambered for .223 Remington - i.e. the other
way round from 7.62!
The NRA has spent decades, probably more than a Century, developing
rifles that shoot well with service ammunition. I have just checked my
Parker Hale T4 (converted No.4) and the calibre engraved on the barrel
is "7.62 NATO". I remember reading an article recently where the
author stated that the 7.62 NATO ammunition as issued here uses smaller
bullet than Sierra Matchking or Lapua - it may be only a fraction of a
'thou, but it is smaller. Also, target rifles used for Target Rifle
matches are throated for the "as issued" ammunition.
I am using home loaded ammunition, mostly Sierra Palma bullets and,
occasionally, Lapua D46s, but with reduced powder charges and the
bullets seated out to within .010" of the rifling. I have been doing
this for many years, but if anyone is thinking of ignoring the NRA
warning, I have to say that I would advise against it unless a competent
gunsmith has checked the combination first.
I have asked the NRA for more details about this and I will post to the
list whatever they say.
