In the NRA bible some years ago, there was, ISTR, a warning about using
commercial .308 ammo in military 7.62 rifles. And also a warning about
using military 5.56 ammo in commercial .223 rifles. Anyone got further
info on the .223/5.56 issue?

There still is a warning, though I have to say I'm not too sure
about the validity of worrying about 5.56 in .223s. Like I said
before, different countries have different manufacturing
standards and it also could be that using some types of .223 in
a 5.56 could be dangerous just as much as using 5.56 in a .223.
It also depends to a large degree on the specific rifle.
Some rifles are tailored for the varmint .223s loads, i.e.
1/14 twist, less distance to the rifling for the 53gr
bullet to jump, using a 62gr FMJ 5.56 would at the very
least result in poor accuracy and possibly premature
erosion of the rifling lead.
