A recent report from Her Majesty's Inspectorate of
Constabulary found that 50,000 DNA samples from members of
the public were held by the police unlawfully. This is the
absurdity of legislation which now allows police to take
DNA samples, by force if neccessary, from anyone who has
been arrested.
Thats arrested - not charged, not tried and found guilty -
merely arrested. The police have now been given the go-ahead
to take samples from people where the DNA sample would have
absolutely no bearing on the investigation, for instance
drink driving. Someone could accuse you of a spurious crime,
your DNA would be taken and you would have absolutely no
concrete guarantee that your DNA "signature" would ever
be removed from the database.
El Presidente Blairs new L109 million scheme to sample
everyone arrested seems to have turned the presumption of
"innocent until proven guilty" on its head. The main reasons
for the scheme is to trawl for people who have committed
offences in the past, surely by taking the sample for checking
against outstanding crimes they are presuming guilt. If
Blair wants to catch criminals, perhaps the L109 million
would be better spent investigating the murder of hundreds
of eldery patients on hospital wards by the withdrawal of
food and the use of do not recusitate orders?
The reluctance by police officers to volunteer DNA samples
is hardly surprising, it all serves to show that the police
don't even trust their own government, despite the fact
that the DNA samples held on the officers would be stored
on a separate database to those taken from criminals, and
officers have been assured their samples will only be used
to eliminate them from enquiries they themselves have worked
on!!!! Looks like any murderer or rapist who happens to be a
police officer will be allowed to slip through the net or is
that what 80% of the Met don't trust?
