>>Talk about trial by the press!<<
My thoughts exactly. Certainly looks like a journalist
padding out a story, with the "nutter going to 'snap' "
line. There was no mention of any evidence of the guy
being a threat to anyone other than his having "books on
gun massacres and bombings". So?

Anyway, here is a copy of my letter from the same issue. I
will be interested to see if I provoke any reaction.

Dear Sir

What marvellous news from Australia about our medallists,
Ian Peel and Richard Faulds and their superb achievements
in shooting. Their dedication certainly deserved the
support they received from Sports Minister Kate Hoey.
Unfortunately we will not be seeing similar results for
pistol shooting because the Firearm (Scapegoats) Act of
1997 has prevented our very talented shooters training
in this country.

I share the hope with Jenny Page of the National Small
Bore Rifle Association that pistol shooting will be
restored as an Olympic sport in this country. People
are realising that the country is not one jot safer after
this exercise in punishing the innocent. Can anyone who
reads the P&J regularly honestly say that firearms crime
has decreased since 1997? There are reports of shootings
almost every day.

Decent, law-abiding shooting sportsmen and women were
never, are not and never will be any danger to anyone.
The views expressed by Ann Pearston to the contrary are
held by a tiny minority. The so-called Gun Control
Network, for instance admitted recently to the Home
Affairs Select Committee that its membership was less
than seven people, yes SEVEN. The British Association
for Shooting and Conservation the biggest of the many
shooting associations has a membership of over 150,000.

Let us look forward to the day when British marksmen and
markswomen bring back even more Olympic honours. Well
done Ian and Richard.

Yours Faithfully
David H Squires
