I have checked my facts (for once) and they do now use .177 AP
(www.mpagb.easynet.co.uk for the full details). As any self-respecting
international will be using a pre-charged pneumatic, the use of ear muffs
would make sense, from a concentration rather than HSE rational.
Back in 1993 and 1994 the Oxford University pentathletes used .22LR, as the
pistol club sometimes cross-trained with them. A number of changes have
occured within the last few years, not least to a one day format, rather
than the previous two, to make it more 'media friendly'.
I was told a few years back that UIT (now ISSF) would probably move to air
pistol from .22LR for political reasons (throughout the world, not just the
UK), with 5-shot weapons being used for Rapid Fire and Sport Pistol/Standard
Pistol.
