We are seeing more and more of this in the countryside. Its not unusual to
see people stop competely on a main road or swerve to the other side of the
road because of a squirrel or other small pest. Its no exaggeration to say
that someone is going to get killed in a road accident because of this
mentality. However its a bigger problem because it reflects a totally false
notion of the reality of nature and mans relationship with animals. Its
almost like people today are stealing the true identity of wild animals and
prefer to see them all as pets to cooh at. Equally the lengths we are now
going to in operating on small animals to save their lives is ridiculous and
inapropriate and is drifting towards a situation where animals and humans
are equated and treated entirely comparably. This is the animal rights
stealth policy brought to us every night on our TV screens. Ironically it
spells disaster for real wild places and wild animals and our relationship
with the natural scheme of things. Apparently people rang the BBC to
complain about the Clarissa programme and Terry Wogan on Points of View said
that one person said - "its alright cooking the goose but I don't want it
shot". I kid you not!!! Its tempting merely to laugh at these people but its
actually very serious and unless we a) mobilise our campaigns on a bigger
scale, and b) get many people involved in the reality of nature, then in the
mid to long term things are not looking good for any fieldsport and even
livestock farming.

I'm pretty sure people have been killed in road accidents because
of this. I know a person who has had an accident swerving to avoid
a squirrel.
