I couldn't give a monkeys personally about weights and measures. As long as
I get what I pay for, that's fine by me. If most people are happy to stick
with Imperial measurements (as Tesco's seem to have discovered, somewhere in
excess of 90% I think), well that is fine by me too.

I do care about common sense, and our system of law that is based on it -
the Common Law.

I agree with Trial by Jury, because the alternatives thoughout history have
always been found to be severely wanting. Likewise Habeus Corpus, the
presumption of innocence, an independent judiciary, etc., etc. They work,
and have a long history of having worked.

ALL these things, are on the verge of being abolished by the EU. Abolished
illegally at that.

The ECJ is going to have as its frame of reference the European Convention
on Human Rights. Even the most cursory examination of the ECHR, shows it to
be a document that is completely shot full of holes, with no safeguards in
it whatsoever. Rights are guaranteed only so far as it is convenient for
Government to allow them. When it becomes inconvenient, then the licences
are already in place for the swift denial of those Rights. In fact, every
single Right is licenced, which means they can no longer be regarded as
rights.

Now I don't know about you Steve, but I happen to think such things aren't
just important, they are downright bloody critical. Such a Constitutional
document will create the sort of Society that I don't think many people
would enjoy living in. It is a recipe for oppression, and it will end in
disaster, inevitably. With so many people across the EU, already opposed to
what is being done in their name (by Brussels own survey, in excess of 80%),
it cannot be otherwise. That means when the crunch comes (and it will), that
crunch stands every chance of being extremely bloody.

Well, I don't happen to like the thought of bloodshed Steve, especially when
it is avoidable and unnecessary. As a result, I am convinced now, the
quicker we are out of the EU, the better for all of us.

The blizzard of legislation coming out of Westminster that we have been
suffering from for years, well the vast majority of it happens to be
originating in Brussels. That is a fact. Westminster has become little more
than a rubber stamping process for it.

Oh, and I have cleared goods through Customs from EU sources as well as
non-EU sources. Admittedly not firearms, but the only difference in
non-firearms items has been a slight difference in the duty.

Politicians aren't that thick - if as you say there is such strong
opposition to it across the EU then it will eventually fail.

As for the ECHR, don't forget that the reason why the ECHR is
shot full of holes is specifically because the Labour Govt. that was
in power at the time it was drafted made submissions that it be
shot full of holes. Regardless, it's better than nothing, which
is apparently what Anne Widdecombe wants.

Leaving the EU is economic suicide, and totally politically
unrealistic, there is more chance frankly of repealing the handgun
ban under this Government than of the UK ever leaving the EU.

The UKIP likes to harp on about how internal investment in the UK
outstrips any other EU country but that is misleading because it
all comes from the US who see the UK as the easiest way into the
EU because we speak the same language. If the UK left the EU a
lot of that would shift to Ireland, I am convinced, and Ireland's
economy is already doing better than ours, although they joined
the Euro too early.

I did vote for the UKIP at the European elections because I
think eventually they will come to realise that leaving the EU
is basically impossible and they will evolve into something like
the Reform Party in Canada. At the moment though their main
strategy appears to be scaring old white voters like the tories
are doing and that is too small a constituency to win a
General election.

I have to laugh quite honestly at what I am reading about how
we should leave the EU because they want to abolish jury by
trial etc., because isn't that exactly what Jack Straw has
already proposed in many cases? I've got to say I trust
the European Parliament in Brussels to respond to public
outrage a lot more than I trust our Parliament. In Europe
there is an actual political opposition!

Steve.
